Medical Transcription is a specialized
profession and requires skills and training in medical terminology,
American English and transcription tools. This is a long
term fulfilling career where you will learn new medical
terms.
A medical transcriptionist is a medical language specialist
who interprets and transcribes dictation by doctors, residents,
nurses, or medical specialists. These dictations cover everything
about the details of patient's visit to clinic, treatment
and management, follow up etc. Such information is recorded
onto a digital voice processing systems. The process of
medical transcription is transferring this information using
word processing.
Such skills are required on an ongoing basis as medical
record is a necessity for all the hospitals, and clinics
for reference and claims processing. Hence a career in medical
transcription is a long term one with continuous learning
and earning. Earnings comes by knowledge, experience and
enhancement in productivity due to use of transcription
tools etc. This is certainly not a "get-rich-quick" option.
Devoting time, and effort is essential!
Basic skills required are keyboarding, which is more than
just typing as accuracy and speed is important with usage
of all the keys efficiently. English skills like grammar,
spellings and ability to memorize and retain medical terms,
meanings and able to use them in day to day transcription
is the key to be a successful medical transcriptionist.
Procrastination is not a trait that works well in this profession.
MT's who have previous in-house experience in a company,
hospital or clinic are in great demand in India and
abroad
and generally are preferred over others to work @home. At
least a year or two of experience working in a clinic or
hospital is a must.
