Medical Transcription ppt

Mr. Parag Shah, a former Customer Care Executive in the telecom industry, quit his job to take up a career in Medical Transcription (MT) and English communication skills. After working with Saral Software Solutions Private Limited, Gujarat’s premier Medical Transcription Company, Parag opted to work from home and became a Home Based Medical Transcriptionist (HBMT). Today he is a successful and happy HBMT working from home, earning a substantial income and keeping himself updated about developments in the field of medicine, software technology and international culture.

Medical Transcription is an established ITeS industry with more than 300 companies across India that provides Medical Transcription services to hospitals and clinics in the US. Today there are more than 20,000 Medical Transcriptionists with well-paid, stable, respectable careers, working in the field, some of whom are home based. Medical transcriptionists listen to recorded dictations of doctors and type them in MS Word, in short, converting voice to text format. For this the transcriptionist needs to be conversant with medical terminology and have excellent English comprehension, vocabulary and grammar skills. All these subjects are included in the six-month Internship program conducted by the Company.

Today Parag has a substantial income through a career in Medical Transcription and is able to provide well for his family, enjoying a comfortable lifestyle. Many career oriented graduates who joined our Internship program worked consistently and sincerely on acquiring the requisite skills and today have a very satisfying career within two years. A career in Medical Transcription makes you conversant with medical terminology and offers tremendous knowledge of the medical field, almost as much as any qualified medical practitioner and helps better grasping and understanding of American English and American accent. Says Ms Smita Cowper, Manager (Human Resources) Saral Software Solutions Private Limited,” You mention a symptom and a transcriptionist can at once relate to the knowledge he has acquired, immediately coming up with illnesses where the symptom could be encountered and its relevant treatment”.

Parag is of the opinion that on an average an experienced MT or HBMT can transcribe 500 to 800 lines and can earn an average income of Rs.500 to Rs.700 per day! Over and above this, an MT with our Company also earns a fixed income every month for being on the rolls of Company. Within 2 to 3 years of working an ambitious, dedicated transcriptionist can rise to the position of Quality Analyst and can contribute through his experience by editing transcribed reports so as to improve their quality before they are finally delivered to the hospitals.

You could be a fresh young graduate in any discipline, or a microbiologist, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, engineer, programmer, a paramedic or someone who is considering a switch over from your current field; you can take up Medical Transcription. This is a field that will continue to remain in demand, remaining unaffected by current recession the world over; a field where the industry continues to recruit trainees and experienced staff all through the year.

Companies in the industry have a payment system, which is dependent on “per line quality and quantity”. This feature allows a transcriptionist or editor to plan his performance over a weekly or monthly basis allowing him/her to earn as per his output. Taking up medical transcription as a career can be both lucrative, interesting, challenging and one that constantly allows for addition to one’s knowledge base in the field of medicine. Any transcriptionist or editor can expect to feel the satisfaction of being financially settled in life, within few years of taking it up as a career.

“Medical transcription is a hard work initially, but can be rewarding both financially and personally”, says Ms Smita. “There are hundreds of medical transcriptionists in India working either in an office environment or from their homes. “ She adds, “ A husband-wife team working as HBMTs can earn a fairly sizeable income without having to leave the confines of their home”! However, she recommends that in order to be able to work from home one needs to be properly trained and mentored during the training period, so as to achieve requisite skills and earn an attractive salary.

Experts in the field believe that transcriptionists working from home need to make an investment in equipment and reference material software and must show willingness at all times to frequently update both so as to keep abreast with the latest trends in the field of medicine and technology.
